Warm-up is the most skipped step in precision weighing — and also the top cause of balance drift and inconsistent data. Many operators turn on the scale and weigh immediately, introducing hidden thermal error into every measurement.

Internal electronic and sensor components generate small amounts of heat during operation. This heat causes microscopic thermal expansion inside the weighing cell. Until the unit reaches thermal equilibrium, the zero point and sensitivity will continuously shift, resulting in steady drift. Skipping warm-up doesn’t just affect accuracy — it also causes calibration to be performed at an unstable baseline, so calibration drifts again within hours.
Warm-up time depends on the precision level of the balance:
0.01g / 0.1g precision bench scales: 15–30 minutes
1mg precision balances: 30 minutes minimum
0.1mg analytical balances: 30–60 minutes minimum
0.01mg high-precision analytical balances: 60–120 minutes recommended For best results, follow the manufacturer’s specification for your specific model.
Plug in and power on the balance.
Ensure the weighing pan is clean, empty and properly seated.
Close all draft shield doors completely.
Leave undisturbed for the full recommended warm-up time.
Do not place samples, weights or containers on the pan during warm-up.
Once warm-up is complete, perform zero reset before first weighing.
❌ Turning on and weighing immediately — the most common error, guaranteeing thermal drift.
❌ Warming up with samples on the pan — sample weight and temperature skew the equilibrium.
❌ Only warming up once a day — if the balance is powered off and restarted, it needs to warm up again.
❌ Skipping warm-up for quick checks — even quick measurements are affected by thermal instability.
❌ Opening draft shields during warm-up — airflow causes temperature fluctuations inside the chamber.
For balances used daily throughout the day, keep the unit powered on standby (display off, power on) instead of fully powering down. This maintains thermal equilibrium and eliminates warm-up wait time for each use, while extending long-term stability.
