Many operators use zero and tare interchangeably, but they serve completely different purposes. Using the wrong one is a surprisingly common cause of digital scale not reading weight correctly, systematic offset, and inconsistent QC results. Understanding the difference is foundational to accurate weighing.

Zero sets the baseline reference point for empty pan weighing. It establishes that an empty weighing chamber equals zero grams.
Used with an empty, clean pan
Sets the absolute zero reference
Typically has a small adjustment range (a few percent of full scale)
Should be performed after warm-up, before calibration, and at the start of each session
Proper zero procedure is exactly how to reset digital scale to zero correctly:
Ensure pan is clean, empty and properly seated
Close all draft shield doors
Wait for display to fully stabilize
Press ZERO once
Wait for 0.000g and stability confirmation
Tare subtracts the weight of a container or vessel from the reading, so the display shows only the net weight of the sample inside.
Used with an empty container on the pan
Stores the container weight in memory
Usually works up to near full scale capacity
Used when weighing samples in boats, beakers, vials or trays
Correct tare procedure:
Place empty container on center of pan
Close draft shields and wait for stability
Press TARE once
Wait for display to show 0.000g
Add sample directly to the container
❌ Using tare instead of zero for baseline reset
❌ Pressing zero or tare repeatedly before display stabilizes
❌ Taring with sample already in the container
❌ Using tare for very heavy containers that exceed tare range
❌ Forgetting to re-zero after removing a tared container
Zero = empty pan, set baselineTare = container on pan, subtract container weight
Using the right function for the right job eliminates one of the most common sources of weighing error. Even the most accurate calibration of electronic balance cannot compensate for incorrect zero and tare technique.
